Erotica

Within the last half century female sensuality, sexuality, and eroticism were very much in the mainstream of photographic work. Presentation of the female form and manifestations of female sexuality/sensuality appear to have been more popular and in demand when compared to other photographic themes. This popularity and growth should not be viewed as a surprise since we have traditionally and continue to live in a male dominated society that has shaped artistic trends and demand. However, during the early years of this century, exclusive focus on female sexuality, sensuality, and eroticism have increasingly become a secondary theme. The shift has been to more abstracted work and more commonly, realistic/journalistic/documentary photographic imagery. Two important notions that dominate contemporary thought have had much to do with this. First, things on all levels seem to be in turmoil necessitating an urgent need to document and record this in the form of photographic imagery. Secondly there is a clear change in the role of women in our world. It is simply no longer deemed acceptable to portray a woman in an subordinate way and/or an object of male erotic imagination or fantasy. My photographic work presented in this portfolio offers a look back to another time. Taken when erotic/sensual imagery was viewed very differently, it was strongly influenced by very well-known photographers of the period. In addition, as with the work of these photographers, these images portray examples of the emerging and empowered female of the time period. These images notably have been revisited but also “reworked”. What were good images back then, are simply better. This work is now shown in their best form and at the same time place them in their proper context.
